Pomegranate has been known in Egypt since ancient Egyptian times, and its importance lies in its nutritional value, as it is considered good for coughs, has laxative properties for the stomach, and its acidity acts as a diuretic. Types of pomegranates include Pomegranate 116, Sweet Local Pomegranate, and Wonderful Pomegranate.

Egyptian pomegranates are distinguished fruits, referred to by farmers as “Red Gold.” Around 100,000 tons are exported annually, with a cultivation area in Egypt of approximately 80,000 acres and a general productivity reaching about 400,000 tons each year, with an average yield of 8 tons per acre.

Asyut is the most prominent governorate in Egypt in terms of pomegranate production, cultivating around 12,000 acres of pomegranates. The most common varieties include Manfalouti, Hamdi, and Sakr varieties. The pomegranate export season begins in mid-September every year.

Pomegranate is referred to as the fruit of paradise and is mentioned in the Quran: “In both of them are fruit and palm trees and pomegranates,” indicating the importance of pomegranates. Pomegranate trees are perennial and not evergreen; they shed their leaves in the fall and bear fruit after 3 years of cultivation. The highest yield is achieved in the tenth year of cultivation, and they can continue to produce for up to 50 years.
